LIBERAL — The Hays Larks swept a Jayhawk League doubleheader from the Liberal Bee Jays Friday night, winning 3-2 in the opener and 3-1 in the nightcap.
Hays had won five straight heading into Saturday night’s game with Liberal.
The Larks were the home team in Friday’s opener, as the clubs were making up a game rained out on June 13 in Hays. After Liberal got a run in the top of the second, Hays answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The runs scored on an error, a wild pitch and an RBI single by Ryan Lush.
Liberal scored a run in the fifth off Hays starter Brad Hutt, who gave up 10 hits in six innings to get the win. Hutt (1-0) allowed two runs, with one walk and four strikeouts. A.J. Dunn pitched a perfect seventh for a save.
In the second game, Hays (19-7 overall, 14-6 Jayhawk) scored three runs in the top of the first inning, and Liberal got one run back in the home half. Dusty Washburn hit a two-run double for Hays, and later scored on an error.
Hays starter Gary Pierpont pitched a complete game. Pierpont (3-1) scattered seven hits, with three walks and seven strikeouts.
