Playing their third doubleheader in as many days with the Nevada (Mo.) Griffons, the Hays Larks accomplished something they hadn’t in the first two — a sweep.
Led by a pair of strong pitching performances from Gary Pierpont and Brad Hutt, the Larks won 4-2 and 2-1 Sunday, the last two games of 15 straight at home.
In the opener, Pierpont (4-2) worked six innings, giving up one earned run on six hits, one walk and four strikeouts. A.J. Dunn relieved Pierpont in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the save. The Larks were the visitors in Game 1.
Ricky Angel went 2-for-4 batting, with two RBIs.
In the nightcap, the Larks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Mike Brownstein scored on a wild pitch. Dusty Washburn finished Hays’ scoring in the third with an RBI single scoring Angel. It was all the runs the Larks needed.
The Griffons lone run came in the fifth. In the seventh, Hutt gave up a single to lead off the inning, but no one else reached, leaving a baserunner stranded.
Hutt struck out four in all seven innings, and walked just one with one earned run.
Washburn and Eric Morrison each had two hits, and Washburn had an RBI.
Hays (32-15, 27-14) will be a Dodge City in a 6 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday in Dodge City.
