DODGE CITY — For the third game in a row, errors were the downfall of the Hays Larks. Despite getting 17 hits Sunday at Cavalier Field, Hays committed three errors and were on the losing end 10-8 to the Jayhawk League’s newest team, the Dodge City A’s.
The loss, the Larks’ fourth straight, drops Hays (9-4 overall, 5-4 Jayhawk League) into fourth-place in the league standings heading into this week’s four-game series at third-place El Dorado. The series begins Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game in El Dorado.
In Sunday’s loss, Hays starter Jarrad Watkins (0-1) lost his first game, giving up six runs (4 earned) on nine Dodge City hits. Hays had a 5-0 lead, before Dodge City battled back to 5-4 in the fifth, then scored four runs in the sixth to take the lead.
Watkins was relieved by Mark Tanner, who finished the inning.
Hays did manage 17 hits, three each for Chase Schippers, Eric Morrison and Kyle Carney. Schippers had a solo home run in the eighth as the Larks attempted a comeback. He had two RBIs in the game, along with Carney. Mike Brownstein and Rich Michalek each had two hits.
Hays has now committed 12 errors in its last three ball games, all losses. The Larks have lost four straight.
