DODGE CITY — Pitching was the name of the game for the Hays Larks in Jayhawk League action Monday against the league’s newest team, the Dodge City A’s.
Larks pitchers allowed just two Dodge City hits as Hays held on for a 2-1 win over the A’s to move to 22-8 on the season and 17-7 in league action. The win leaves Hays a game back of Derby (19-7), which plays host to Dodge City in a single game today in Derby. The Larks travel to take on the Twins on Wednesday before returning home for what is scheduled to be a 15-game homestand in 10 days. It begins with a doubleheader Friday against Joplin, Mo., at Larks Park.
In Monday’s win, starter Richard Timbrook (3-1) pitching six innings, allowing just one Dodge City hit and one earned run in the first inning when Dodge City (6-22 Jayhawk) took a 1-0 lead. When Hays took a 2-1 lead after scoring one each in the second and third innings, the teams got into a pitchers’ duel. Timbrook was relieved by Travis Crow, who pitched 11â„3, and A.J. Dunn, who picked up the save in 12â„3 innings. Crow allowed Dodge City’s other hit.
The Larks offense managed three hits off Dodge City starter Angel Cordova, who went 81â„3 innings.
Mike Brownstein and Ricky Angel each drove in a run for the Larks, each without getting a hit. Brownstein grounded out to second base in the third inning to score Sean Finley and put the Larks on top. Angel grounded out to shortstop to score Eric Morrison and tie the game in the second inning.
Tyler Barnett, Rich Michalek and Morrison had the three Larks hits.
